Part 4: Rules for the Game
Rule #1: Never discuss your problems and don’t let her discuss hers. You’re the good time guy, not the boyfriend. If she tries to bring it up, just laugh it off and order another drink.
Rule # 2: Your cell phone is your only phone. Never give out your home number or your work number and never call from anything but your cell, way too many caller id’s out there. And never, ever leave your cell phone on anything but vibrate mode or silent mode, especially on a date. You don’t need any distractions.
Rule # 3: Game night is Game night, Scout nights are different and should be treated as such. While out with a starter, focus on the task at hand. Give your starter full attention. Don’t allow your eyes to wander and do everything you can to ensure that she gets the Victory. Because, when she wins, you all win and everybody’s happy. She won’t worry about other women, she has no reason to. By focusing your attention on her, you instill the confidence she needs to continue her role as a team player. As a bonus, you become a much better date: a player’s coach.
There will be loses, you need to accept that. Maybe her agent (mother/friend) has gotten involved, or she’s looking to retire and get out of the game, that’s fine. If a player has lost that “no I in team” mentality, sometimes a quick Timeout or even a Suspension may be in order.
A player might just request a trade or want to explore free agency. No problem. Who are you to get in the way of someone’s happiness? You may just have to let her go. But, you may be able to pick up a replacement off of waivers.

Part 3: Play Ball!
Now comes the hard part. You need to manage your roster and this can be tricky. You’re dealing with fragile egos and need to handle them accordingly. It is very important to come up with a working schedule, a way to maximize your Rotation while minimizing the number of appearances. Too many starts and a player may assume a starring role: girlfriend status.
A consistent once a week Rotation is usually best, it keeps the player fresh. You take your Ace out to that new club opening on Thursday. Your second starter, you take to that party on Saturday (*Friday’s scout night*). Then, you take the third to a movie on Sunday. You can reorder to keep things new, but you can’t break the rotation. If a starter looks like she’s not going to finish the game, no problem, you can always call a closer from the bullpen. But, you can’t break the once-a-week Rotation, if you give a player a second start too soon, she may
feel comfortable enough to tell you about her day.
Moreover, never let the players determine the schedule. There is no League Commissioner scheduling games for every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night. No, you determine the schedule. If you feel like staying home all weekend, but your Ace is chomping at the bit, you let her go. Let another man get her drunk, you don’t always have to be there for those early, costly innings. Or, you can just call in a closer and turn your phone off: “Oh, you called, I must have dosed off.”
Which brings me to phone calls. The pang of every man’s existence. It may benefit you to not limit phone calls. You need to scatter communication throughout the week, to keep you on their minds and to make any necessary schedule changes: find out their plans, without making any. Put her on the IR. This bit of info may have just freed up another Scout Night, or you may want to give a closer a surprise start (she’ll love that). The phone is a tool, so use it.

Part 2: The Roster
You’re out on the town, its Friday night, happy hour, and you find yourself in the midst of one of those conversations where both you and the lady in question are talking about everything except the one thing that’s on both of your minds. Avoid small talk. Don’t get to know her. Keep her laughing and off-guard, she’ll eventually slip and let you in. At that glorious moment, get the digits. A wiser man than I once said, “There is only one thing in life that once lost, can never be replaced: time.”
So don’t waste it, not yours, not her’s. If you don’t get the number, it was all for naught, and you’ll make her self-conscious, wondering “Wasn’t I good enough?” Or worse, she’ll hate men, making it harder for your brother-in-arms to hit that ass. So, for the good of humanity, sack up and get the digits. If you do, then congrats, because now you’ve got a starter. And remember to repeat this step continuously at any and all opportunities.
Once you’ve got a workable staff, you need to assemble your roster. You need to analyze each player’s individual qualities to place them properly, capitalizing on their talents. Your starters obviously see the most playing time, so they need to be your finest and most fun. They’re your all-stars, the type of girl you are proud to take out on the town, show them off at special occasions.
A nice Rotation should include three starters, not so much it makes your head spin and just enough to keep them interested. The flip side is that once a player is granted starting status, she’ll never want to come off the bench again. You can’t call a starter to finish late in the game, for this you need a bullpen.
The bullpen should consist of girls who may not have the right “stuff” to start and complete a full game, but are perfectly suited to come in the middle to late innings to finish. They may never win the MVP, but their unique talents are essential to the Rotation. After all, where would the Yankees be without Mariano Rivera.
